i just drove from colorado to california with everything i own and coming over the rockies and sierras everything was cool. at the very end of my trip i completely lost power to the wheels, engine still runs great, but there is a noise that sounds like a ton of air blowing???? the transmission shifts through the gears fine but seems like it is in a constant slip though, like i punch it and the engine revs but nothing happens. if i start slow i can creep up to 50 or so on flat ground, but i loose it on any little hill. like i said it sounds (from the cab) similar to blowing air at 100 psi but i dont think it is air blowing, thats just what the closest thing i can describe the sound as. when i looked underneath the transfer case seems pretty wet like something is leaking??? could this be the problem? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance
I was hoping you would say man.. Clutches are alot cheaper than rebuilding a tranny which is most likely what you will be doing soon. You said you had all you own with you so I'm assuming you were hauling a trailer. Two mountain passes with a trailer load is definately enough to push an older tranny over the edge.
Check the level of fluid in your transfer case and your tranny. If both are OK the outlook is not to good.
no trailer, just everything beneath the shell. i try not to accumulate too much stuff just in case a quick get away is needed. still enough tools to sag the back a little bit. do you think it could still be replacement time? it still works through the gears and shifts normal........just about at 25% of normal power. if i do have to take it to a shop, i would like to have a bit of heads up just so they wont be blowing smoke up my a$$. is there any way to tell if it is smoked? any tell tell things i could investigate before i go?
