Question dusted engine

Hi, I am having big trouble with my '03 F-350. It has been running very rough when idling and at lower speeds, but when I reach higher speeds ( 40ish and up) it smooths right out and seems fine. I took it to my dealer and they hooked it up. I was told that the engine was dusted and that the only thing that they could do was replace the entire engine. Not on warranty. I'm wondering if replacement is my only option? Could anyone tell me some possible causes of this. I had the truck serviced at my local garage faithfully, so I don't think it was dirty filters. Any help I can get would be great!

a 7.3 or a 6.0? can you take off the intake boot of the turbo, and get a pic of the compressor wheel for me?

Yup if the eng. was dusted the turbo impeller will show it.Not only dirty filters will cause this but a hole on the sucktion side of intake will also do it,for your info 8oz of dust will take out a mack diesel.Have seen rings so worn they would carve a block of wood

i have seen that video that Cummins put out a long time ago. i saw it in class in the Filtration-Air section. they ran the engines and dumped 2 oz of dust in them gradually, tore them down and mic'd them, and it became un-usable after 8 oz of dust, dust that was removed from dirty air filters from equipment in the construction line.
