transmission questions
When looking from under the driver's door, you should be able to see a large plug marked "drain." Now get under the truck and above that "drain" plug should be an "add" plug. Pull that plug and check the level of fluid with your finger. Check your owners manual to be sure for your tranny, but I think you'll find it will be regular old
ATF.
That transmission has three rubber plugs at the top for easier access to the shifting forks. You can find these plugs at the dealership for about $10, or maybe just a little more. I'm sure someone here knows the exact dimensions of the hole if you wanted to replace them with permanent plugs, such as a frost/freeze plug.
It's really an easy job. I would recommend having a vacuum cleaner handy - since you're going to be doing this job from the cab. Why not pull the seats and have plenty of room to work - you might just find enough change to pay for the plugs, eh?
As for the hard shifting - just play nice and she'll keep going. A coworker's '93 started shifting hard and he would try to force it into gear all the time. He ended up getting so frustrated that he beat the snot out of that truck. Mine shifts hard as well sometimes. I've found that if she doesn't want to go into gear easily, I shift into 4th and downshift. Seems that syncs everything up pretty well. Once I've started out and am moving, I've never had a problem shifting, up or down. The only time I've noticed mine is when the engine's running and I'm shifting from neutral.
