Service block?

I was looking over the engine that Ipulled out of my parts truck the other day, and could not find a casting number on the block. There was just a blank pad were the number should have been. It has 352 on the front of it, and was supposed to be a 390. (aren't they all) The only other noticable thing about it was that it had vertical ribs cast into the skirt. One side had more of these ribs than the other.

I haven't opened it up yet, so I don't know what it is for sure. The heads on it are D2TE AA's.

Could it be anything special?

I have seen these ribs on almost all, if not all of the 360 blocks that I have had in the past. Also the crank on the 360/352 have square cut throughs' and the 390 has ankle cuts on the throughs'. But these are my observations and my not be fact, but a good starting point.

It could be a 428 service block. The ribs appeared in 72 on the FE and FT service and production blocks. DIF continued to cast 428 and 427 service blocks in the 70's while MCC cast the 360,390 and 391, 361 etc... truck blocks. With the DIF foundry logo and ribs present good chance it's a 428 block. A 13/64" drill bit placed between the cyl wall cores will tell ya if it is. There might be the "428" cast inside the center freeze plug hole or in the front bannana cooling slots on the head deck.The 428 service blocks I've bought had triangles on the maincaps. You can also look for the bumps or ladybugs as they are called on one or several of the maincaps. These will denote nodular maincaps. You should also see a punch mark on the flat side of the cap if the ladybugs are present. This is the brinell hardness testing mark. The missing casting number is also very common on these blocks. You could have a nice block there...
