Exclamation Need Excursion advice quick!

Hello all, glad I found this board. I’ve got an opportunity to pick up an 05’ Limited 4x4 with the V10 at a really good price, but I’ve got a couple of questions that this board might be able to answer.

I understand that the 4x4 isn’t for dry road use; why? Is it a 4x4 “light” system?

Is there anything specific I should look at / look out for?

Any other advice would be appreciated – I need to move on this in the next day or so, so quick responses would be helpful.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <o></o>

Thanks in advance!

First off Welcome to FTE Slamdunkpro!

Check out the read first's at the top of this and every other forum so you know what goes and what doesn't.

As for the advice you seek, be prepared to do some reading.....

The 4WD system isn't a light system, it's designed to be used and in some cases abused. It can take a beating and keep moving especially when you need it most. Dry use seems to mess it up somehow, don't quite know the fairytale behind it, but it's not recommended. My neighbors use their 4wd when it rains just to keep things moving and lubed up; they've never had a problem with it locking up or doing anything weird.

Since this is a V10 we're talking about and not a 6.0, you really don't have anything to worry about. The V10 is and always was a flawless, yet surprisingly powerful engine. The only thing you'd have to look for is whether the maintenance was current and if the vehicle had any issues. That can all be accomplished by asking your local Ford service dept. for what's called an OASIS report. The said report will tell you of any work that's been done to the vehicle by Ford. (maintenance, warranty work, etc.) If everything looks current, then all you have to do is drive it, make sure you like it, and go from there. Something else you may want to look into is a Ford esp and/or maintenance package. I did a write up on it here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...warranty.html?

As long as you're under 36K, you'll also be able to purchase them either through FTE (which saves a heap of money) or at a local Ford dealer. Either way you're safe and don't have to worry about unexpected expenses if your truck ever breaks. Other than that, enjoy your new X!

Thanks for the welcome and quick response. Sadly it's got 44k miles.

wow, an 05 with 44,000 on the clock??? thats alot for me. if you can see the maintenance records though, i would say to try and beat him on the price because of the V10, and the mileage. i would tell him you are doing him a favor and taking it off his hands. even though you will be getting an awesome truck. i love my limited v10 4x4. wouldn't trade it until ford makes another one.

If those 44K miles are of the highway variety, I'd take that over 24K of city-type driving any day. See if you can verify one way or the other. Good luck.

I asked the same question about the 4WD on my former '94 Bronco when I took retail delivery. It was explained to me (maybe incorrectly) that the gearing, etc, does not exactly line-up from front to back and that there needs to be some slip from the surface so that the 4WD system does not bind.
