How about a small exhaust leak starting somewhere around the manifold?

look at the exhaust manifolds they are known to crack. also look for loose or missing
bolts where manifold mounts to head .also could be pinging due to to much engine timing
advance.should be 10 degress with spout un plugged and 30 degress with spout plugged in

Exhaust leaks on or near the manifold cause ticking sounds that are heard under load and you'd have to be listening closely to hear them at idle or other times.
