Alright i did a search for how to take a steering column out of a 61 F250. Is it true it is one piece or could i pry it up and out?? I appreciate everything everyone has suggested. I have decided to restore her. Not many around anymore and it has been a dream to restore one. It will involve patience.
to remove the column, remove steering wheel, 2 bolts to dash, and any linkage for gear shift, disconnect wiring harness from column, and it should slide out
Not sure 'bout the 61, but my 66 has a plate on the firewall (in the engine compartment) where the column is clamped on. I had to remove this as well to get my column off
If remember right 61's had a solid shaft that went all the way into the steering box. The only way to get it out is to unbolt the box from the frame, pull off the idle arm, disconnect the wiring, remove the floor opening panel, unbolt the 2 bolts holding the column to the dash, and remove as one piece.
All the straight axle trucks I've worked on had a one piece colum and steering gear. to remove it you have to remove the drag link, three bolts on the frame, the tin plate on the floor, two bolts to the dash, turnsignal harness, removing the steering wheel gives you more room but is not always necessary. Also the horn wire runs through and out the bottom of the steering gear box.
