just found out on mt 01 v-10 with only 40000 miles 2 broke on driver side 3 on passenger whats up with this now my truck is starting to make a ticking noise can I do this fix in my back yard??
yes ,you can with proper tools an ability.
this is not a job for someone who only changes oil though.
go to the dealer and get the new update ss stud/an nut kit.
if they are broke within the head .best left for the pro to do.
Sure, with 5 broken studs the ticking noise has 99.8% got to be manifold leaks. But a lot of people report having heard ticking just prior to a blown plug. I'd check the torque to be on the safe side.....
Road salt causes most of it, I'm sure. BUT - we here on Long Island have been inundated with snow/ice the past few winters (the last one being an exception) and I always use the SD when it's ice/snow on the roads. MY rancho shocks look like rust - no white, just rust.
BUT - my exhaust studs are still on. The nuts are looking pretty sad, which I think means it will eventually lose a few studs though. Oh well... I'm sure it's going to be OK for a few more years yet.
I did it..... It wasn't easy. It can be done in the back yard. I had to invest in some tools from sears to remove broken, stripped, bolts. I tried lots of PB blaster. I removed my inner fenders, which made it easier to do. I had planed installing a set of shorty headers, but, there wasn't enough room to get my hands in to install the bolts that came with them. I would of had to loosen the motor mounts, and lift the front of the engine. I wasn't ready to go that far. So, I put the old manifolds back on with new nuts and studs. i made sure I used anti-seze to remove at later date much easier.
Good luck.... So, the over all picture Yes, it can be done, but how much work are you really willing to do?

Could this possibly be covered under the corrosion warranty? Doesn't it state that it only covers complete perferation, if the studs are falling off I would call that perferation. I am not happy with the service I got at my dealer on this topic, b/c I had exhaust leak sounds before 3/36,000, but they said the noise was coming from a tiny drain hole in the muffler! bs I now have the complete gale banks kit for the V-10.
Man,, how can studs break????????? Where did they break? At the heads or did the nuts corriode off? I'm curious about this one,, been a motor head since 59,,never heard of studs breaking on thier own...Thanks for any info,, Ted O.
I think they are made too weak with too tight of tolerances and when the cast v-10 header is hot and expands the weak studs break. This is a warranty issue that Ford ignores unless the owner really knows what is happening. I wish I would've known what was happening and made the dealer fix it under warranty. Instead the banks install was mucho $$$
Once the stud is corroded enough, it weakens and breaks. The way it usually happens, it breaks flush with the surface of the manifold. So, it's really the nut and exposed threads that come off.
And, much more prevelant in northern states where there's lots of salt used in the winter.
Does this happen to the 5.4? I think there is more to it than corrosion. Ford would've used stainless if they would've known that the studs were going to break. The V8 studs may corrode, but it seems they do not break?
