Why spend the money on a K&N filter when the air intake tubes on my 96 have that restrictive plastic inline coupler? It reduces my 4'' tubes down to the size of a silver dollar! Can I get rid of it? Ford had to put it there for a reason.
As lousy as many Ford factory cylinder heads were before the PI Triton/Intech or even the Duratech family heads came along, that's an even bigger problem before the air filter becomes relevant.

Huh??? Pics please....
Can't say I have ever seen what you describe, but it would be gone quicker than a fat kid on a Smartie if it were on my truck.
Sorry, no pics. I have dual intake tubes from the filter box to this plastic coupler which is positioned close to the intake. The dual tubes then proceed to the TB. There is a large vacuum line exiting the bottom of the coupler with an inline canister (valve) on it. Then the vacuum line inters the intake just below the TB.
It looks like ford designed it that way(small holes in the coupler) to create more vacuum maybe.
Has anyone taken this off or made the holes bigger?
A speed density system on a 96?!? Thought that would have been a MAF system. Either way, I think some pics would really help on this one. Know anyone with a camera phone or a digital camera?
I think the 460's had some restrictive plastic piece midway down the intake hoses (460's remained speed density, except maybe in California, until the new superduty trucks arrived). I've read of other guys opening these things up without any problems.
I remember reading about this too. Some said it wouldnt hurt to open it up and some said it would. I wish I could find that thread, not having any luck with the search.
