In general if you have the Powerstroke door badge, then it is a late 99. The early 99's did not have the door badge. The Powerstroke was on the front fender above the "V8". The early 99's also had 4" blocks on the rear axle instead of the 2" blocks. Also the side moulding did not extend onto the bed of the truck on the late 99's.

Now, none of these are "for sure", as changes were phased in, but in general, these will tell you which you have. If it is an early 99, the turbos were different along with the turbo pedestal, so in order to put on an aftermarket or later model turbo, you have to change a bunch of stuff. There are kits available, but they are not cheap.

Badges will only confirm an early 99 if it has the fender V8 badge. My early 99 was built in 10/98 and the crossover was sometime in 12/98. Does your air filter housing look like this? The true test is which intake plenums you have. The big ones are the late 99's and the small ones are the early 99's.

That's a good truck. It should have the forged rods in there since it's early enough.

I too have an early '99 (born on 8/98). Having the early turbo is great b/c we are less prone to have the turbo surge issues some later models have and then they end up upgrading to the wicked wheel (wicked wheel was standard issue in our models). I didn't know that about having forged rods . Another notable difference is the rotors. When I was in the market for new rotors I bought the powerslots and they didn't fit as the hubs are slightly different - since I couldn't wait I had no choice but to throw stock rotors on them as all the aftermarket ones I looked at didn't fit.

Another small difference is the air intake. I ripped out the junk air intake and put in the 6637 but the intake house is too short and need a 22.5 pvc elbow to make it fit - later models don't typically need this.

Also, not sure if this is indicative of an early '99 but I have absolutely no problem generating 23# of boost unloaded by simply going WOT at the bottom of a medium hill and the boost skyrockets within about two seconds.

All in all this truck I would never trade it, it is rock solid and it is used primarly for towing a 26' gooseneck horse trailer around New England.
