I'm going to look at a '88 F-250 with a 351. He only wants $500 for it, because he thinks it has a blown head gasket. It's a regular cab, 2wd, automatic. The body is also supposed to be decent.
What else should I look for? I basically just want a project truck that I can take apart and put back together so I can learn how things work. If I break it so bad it never runs again, I can at least part out what I didn't break and get my money back.
Ok, I looked at it. It has a C6 tranny, and a 3.55 open 10.25" rear end. The truck smokes like a wet chimney. It looks like it's coming out where the exhaust manifold meets the block. Most of the smoke is probably due to the fact that oil is dripping directly onto the manifold. The smoke coming from the exhaust further back is white, which would point to the head gasket, but could also mean a cracked block or ead, correct?
This looks like a bit of a project, but he's *really* negotiable on the price. I could probably get it for $100.
