possible. also, im not 100% worried about the MAX rpm out of a 514, i myself know a few people in the local pulling circuit who ran a 514 back in the 80's doing nearly 8,000 rpm. but wouldnt a 429 reach high R's quicker than a 514 due to the shorter stroke? or is that even right? i'd love to run a 514, but 514's are hard to find outside a parts catalogue. this
514s are merely a 460 (or 429 IIRC) block with a longer stroke crank and BB Chevy rods.
you can order a 514 crank from summit for a decent price.
There are a lot of factors in how quickly you can reach max RPM with an engine. Stroke will effect it but I guarantee you if you have a properly built 514 (I'd recommend much bigger than 514 for your purposes honestly) with heads that flow and a cam set up properly you'll hit 7,000rpm so fast you'll crap yourself.

well put..
you mean kinda like when you build a 700 horse motor then hit the 200 shot of giggle gas?
Well, my last engine with a very mild cam and Trick Flow heads would bounce off a 6000 rev limiter in no time. If I just made a split second tap to the floor and let off it would flash the shift light. Take a really good head with a nasty cam and see what happens. Ask Rob how fast his stroker hits the limiter and I think his is close to 8000.
They are Firestones, aprox. 55" tall & 25" wide, on open center wheels, they are a turf tread, but would be good for doing a build up, then when finished they could be run till a more agressive tread could be afforded,
That was always my plan for them anyway, I really liked the open center wheels, a guy could easily build a sent of centers for what ever diff's he decides to use,
I'll see if I can get some pics & post them,
so what is "decent" for a 514 crank? how bout some rods? and i have no idea what size cam i will need, im totally lost in the cam dept.
but there is a 1-ton 4x4 down the road that has a 460 in it i am thinking of buying (for many reasons) but if i can get it to be as responsive as you all say they can be you have just converted me.

Close to 8000rpm? no it's right at 8000rpm, and it will hit that when free reving before you can get your foot clear to the floor and infact I am not sure I can even get the secondaries open before the shift light is on. And I can hit the 7400rpm shift light 3 times (yes that means in third gear the shift light is on) and push the 8000 rpm limiter in third in under 4 seconds.
