I'd like to see HP and Torque numbers for the 390, 410 and 428. I drive a 1970 F-250 crewcab W/auto 2wd. It's my family hauler and is used to tow a large/heavy horse trailer. It has a 390 I bought reman. W/ a crack. I'll soon get tired of fussing with it.I'm considering upgrading displacemnt and/or stroke. I have since replaced the heads W/ big valve, big port replacements. I have a spare 390. Any advise is appreciated. PS I've already run nearly a gallon of Liquid Glass/ sodium whatever. Thanks Mel
I have a 72 2wd Crew cab and had the same question about a year ago. My decision was to build a mild 428. I was told a nicely built 390 would suffice, but I know there is no replacement for displacement. With the 428, I can stick with all the existing brackets, etc and don't need a swap kit.
I figure with the mild 428 I will have an easy 350 hp and torque in the 450 to 475 lb / ft range. From the factory, the 428 I have was rated at 345 / 462.
My build includes forged pistons (~8.75 to 1), 484/510 lift 204/214 duration at 112 LSA cam, factory "S" manifold, and Autolite 4100 (1.12).
Some might argue about the manifold and carb selection, but for the restricted (ie low) rpm range I drive in, the "S" / Autolite combo can not be beat.
Initially I am using the log manifolds, but plan to put headers when the engine is broken in.
That kind of torque with a nice rear axle ratio (3.73) should allow me to move mountains.
