Question Brakes

I changed the front brake pads on my 99 EXP. I pushed the pistons back and removed the excess brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir, installed the new pads, pumped the brakes and refilled the master cylinder reservoir with new Dot 3/4 fluid. Brakes were spongy. I bled the calipers and got air from both sides. Brakes are now hard as a rock. I never opened the system except for the master cylinder cap. Where did the air come from? I used the same procedure on a 02 Mercury Grand Marquis and did not have to bleed the calipers.

i had the same feeling with my '99 exped, it felt like the brakes were spongy but i read somewhere that you have to "take it for a drive" and brake a few times from 30kph down to 15 kph in order to let the brake assist ( i think that is what it was called) set itself up.

I was a little leary as "going for a drive" with spongy brakes didn't excite me, lol. But I did it and they stiffened up within a few brakes.

cheers

I had driven it for at least 10 miles and did a lot of braking. I bled them the next day and it solved the spongy problem. The brake system was not opened prior to the bleed operation.
