Starter problem

First let me say thanks to everyone for there help with my other issues. Now I have one more... I just recently took alot of my parts off, cleaned and painted my block, manifold, adjusted valves, etc.

After I got it put back together I went to start it and I had trouble, I think my timing was out of wack.,,, got my timing pretty much set, and at times it will start fine other time, the starter will drag. While I had it running I took off my neg. cable off the battery and it cut off.. I pulled my generator off and had it tested ( it was rebuilt in Jan ) it tested fine.. put it back on, changed my belt,,, started fine... I let it run for a while and then cut it off and tried to restart,,, it would just drag.. i traced my grounds and need to replace my starter ground... If that doesn't do it I'm think about having the starter rebuilt.

Any other suggestions!!!!

Thanks again.

By starter drag I assume you mean it acts like the battery is low? If so, here are some things that can cause that, aside, of course, from a low battery.
1. Worn motor brushes.
2. Worn motor bearings.
3. Loose contact on the solenoid or on the starter.
4. Loose starter.
5. Starter mis-positioned; shims: missing, or too many.
6. Bad solenoid (worn internal contacts.)
7. Worn bendix or armature shaft.
8. Bendix housing shaft bushing bad or missing.
9. Poor engine-body-frame ground.
10. Poor battery or alternator ground.

ray, The new paint could be causing you to have a bad ground.

A cheap trouble shoot would be to take the starter to an auto parts store just to make sure it is ok before trying other fixes. Many around here will test a starter free of charge. If this is a replacement starter, make sure it is correct for the trans being used. Example: a starter for a 300-6 & 3 spd and a 300-6 & C4 are not the same, even though they both look alike and will bolt on the same location...
