Man .... I wish I'd a done this earlier instead of last. Been putting all kinds of mods on my wifes 2004 Excursion.
Bully Dog Tripple Dog downloager with outlook monitor
Banks Intercooler system
Banks Monster Exhaust
Volant cold air intake
I was impressed with the mods and all. EGT's were down from stock and air intake temps were ok but not great. Today I got the hole saw out and opened up some fresh air ports in the grill support. HOLY CRAP!! My intake temps have dropped a lot!! Even with the intercooler the intake temps would hover over ambient by 2-3 degrees and go up way higher in traffic.
Now with it 97 degrees out today in the drive way I'm getting ambient temp in the intake ...> SWEET. It does rise after idle'n for a while but as soon as I start rolling they drop like a hammer!! At 55mph in 97 F temps I'm seeing intake temps at 91-93. Before I was lucky to get ambient.
Great mod!!! I wouldn't have believed the difference if I hadn't seen the numbers!!
Thanks for all the great ideas guys!!
The thermocoupler for the external gauge on the a/c controls says 97 deg F. That thermocoupler is right below the air intake for the air filter housing. My guage on my outlook says 92 deg F for intake temp which is taken in the intake on the engine.
Intercoolers can cool and air charge to below ambient right?
Either way it doesn't matter .... the difference is profound on the gauges. Nothing has changed except for the mod. I'm happy with it
Intercoolers can cool and air charge to below ambient right?
i dont think so... there not a AC, just a heat exchanger
but never the less the cooler the air going into them has to help
From an old post on FTE, here is the link to an off-site posting of pics someone took.
Simple, yet effective... but getting water up and inside your intake tube is a no-no. Hopefully, your running the stock air filter with blue media which is a synthetic media. The white media that NAPA sells is indeed a "powercore" branded and made filet, but has white media (cellulose) which is why it is less expensive.
Just a question on this mod...Wouldn't this mod be the same thing as cutting a hole in the side of your Snorkel to get better air?(grin) Better air, but defeats the purpose of the design?

Just a question!

Cutting a hole in the snorkle would not allow for the "ram-air" effect. As well, a hole in the snorkle would allow hot engine compartment air to be sucked in and not the "cooler" ram-air effect air to be sucked in.
That is why some are posting, or have posted, that they feel that they have improved performance at highway speeds rather than at idle... its the "ram-air" affect they are claiming!!
Sorry...Should have clarified my statement a little...I meant the part about the water being directed into the filter housing much easier after the mod vs. the stock...

The down side to doing this mod is...
1) More dirt and bugs in your air filter.
2) Water getting into yoru air filter or water being sucked into your air filter.
3) If #1 above happens, more frequent changes will be needed.
4) If #2 happens above, it could get past your filter and ruin your injectors or it could break down the non-OEM filters and/or non-OEM cellulose filters (stock filters are blue synthetic media).
Some will cut the whole ina different location as not to direct water up into the intake hose, but then you would not get the "ram-air effect".
how would water get there, unless your in a lake.. a little rain water should not get in there, maybe In a down pour... also I don't see how it would hurt injectors as at this point any water would be in your intake then into cylinders , not in the fuel system wear it would hurt injectors

water through the intake won't hurt anything. reference the water injection thread where water actually makes more power. It can't get into your injectors I've run this mod since my truck was new and have no issues except having to change the filter more often, although it's never even moved the filter minder. Even with the airaid I didn't have a problem (except the airaid didn't seem to filter as well as the stocker). There are lots and lots of trucks running this mod--if you have a problem with bugs then put some screen mesh over the hole you made and enjoy the benefits of much cooler air.
