I would like to give my Sport Trac more power. My wife hasn't even put 3,000 miles on it yet and it seems to be running well. It's just that it seems so underpowered compared to my Excursion. I realize that there is quite a difference in the motors but even my wife says it doesn't have enough guts and she is not at all a gearhead. Any suggestions? It's an 02 with the 4.0 and about 92k miles. I'd like to spend less than $1,000 and not destroy the fuel milage.
I own an 02 explorer xlt with the 4.0 and my girlfriend also says it dont have power. We are comparing this to my dads 2000 Eb explorer with the sohc 4.0 also and it is faster for some reason. I notice by pressin the pedal and in the 2000 it goes like a bat outta hell whereas my 02 takes time (gradually gets up there). I notice I get more of response when I have O/D OFF but I still think something is wrong. I thought 2002 would be and is supposed to be a faster engine????? I just had my tranny fixed as a solenoid had gone bad (72000miles) and I have the bad tensioner problem with the annoyying rattle @2400-2900rpm. So if someone can tell me what could be the problem???I also just had a or the converters changed as Ford said they were bad.(1300$ canadian) under warranty. I just want some power. My engine revs high but doesnt follow with my speedometer??/???
E-mail Doug at www.bama chips.com, for around 400 bucks, and 5 minutes of your time, your exploder will feel like it has a v-8 in it. I have done alot of mods to my ranger 4.0 sohc, like headers, intake, and such, but none of those things compared to the boost I got with the bama chips programer, it's awesome !!! Doug tunes the programer specifically to your trucks computer, and your needs. You get 3 tunes in 1 programer. I got 87 octane mpg, 92 octane torque, and 93 octane hp tunes, but my mpg improved in all 3 tunes, as long as I don't hammer it to much. Just tell Doug your octane levels, and performance needs, and he will create you some awesome tunes. My ranger improved by about 20 pounds of torque, and 15 hp over stock. It's one mod you can feel the difference for the money spent.
If you just drive round town take out the spare tire and jack, bigger intake, more breathable air filter, exhaust and a custom chip for your engine that has different setting like a setting for towing. Make sure your tires are inflated properly and if you have big mud tires that does not help ether. Lighter weight rims and tires makes a big difference in acceleration. If your truck is jacked up you lose performance wise on the freeway compared to a truck that is lower to the ground. Run full synthetic oil in your engine helps a little. Some people swear by the type of brand of gas they are using that they get better performance, me I swear by Chevron.
If it only has 3,000 miles on it give it some time to break in some, the engine is still tight (It’s best to use dino oil, they say not to use synthetic oil to break in an engine. Polishing & wax helps on the freeway maybe 12% if that but trucks are not aerodynamic anyway but makes your paint last longer and increases the value of your truck and makes you look good while you are passing everyone going up the hill)
