All right guys, whats the deal. I've been snooping around the Exhaust forums and have talked with several muffler shops and I've been getting only two sorts of advice. Some say exhaust upgrades for the I6 are pointless and I just just stay with a stock style muffler. Others say that I should just hack off the whole system and just leave a cat or two. What gives? Isn't there a decent muffler out there that makes our 300 sound good?
I'm not looking to make my 89 sound like a V8, just to sound more aggressive. I know this thread probably belongs in the exhaust forum but I've tired that and havn't gottem much response. Everyone here in this forum has been extrodinarily helpful in the past so I figured I'd give it a shot and see what you all had to say.
Don't fool with it. You can't make a six sound cool like a V8 and the exhaust system already in-place is more than adequate. You can't add any zip with the exhaust mods.
i disagree, without the restrictive muffler and tailpipe and with straight pipe angled out the side i get 1 mpg better and it does not sound ricey or loud and it does feel zippier. i am not trying to make mine sound like a v8, just wanted it to be a little louder and that is what i got. my 2¢.
Well the rattling muffler finally got the best of my nerves so I tore it off last night. That leaves the two cats and a short section of pipe. To my suprise, this set up is barely any lounder than with the muffler on. I do notice a small difference in sound and performance but my wife couldn't tell.
You guys may be right, the cats with a stright pipe is the solution. I'll drive it around like this for a few days and see how I like it.
