I have an early 2005 F250 6.0 with Factory Tow Command. How has everyone one else tested their 5th wheel hookup when first hooking up? I used to check it (on 1992 F250) by holding brake controller after hookup and pulling forward after the truck/trailer were first connected and wiring attached and holding controller manual lever to make sure the 5th wheel didn't unhook. Trailer landing gear was still down.
With the new F250, the Tow Command doesn't hold the brakes on trailer until you are moving at least 5 MPH...like after with doors lock. This isn't the time to be checking your hookup. Makes for dropping the trailer on the bed rails! This has GOT to be a safety isssue or a recall for Ford. I see they fixed this problem with the 2006 models.
I guess I should go check with my dealer...but wanted to get an answer here too.
I know I've seen threads here about this so I would do a search. But if memory serves me correct this is a know issue with the early 05's. There is no recall or anything from ford. There is a copy of the service bulliten in the forum somewhere but the jist of it is that your system is performing as designed.
On the early 05's the system doesn't fully function until the truck gets to approximatly 15 mph.
BpofMD: we have never used a 5-wheel hitch....only gooseneck...but we gave it some thought : how about hitch up your unit .....chock the trailer really well from forward movement...raise the trailer supports just a tad to prevent pull-stress....but not so much if you failed your " test", that it would do more than settle/grab the land ?
I have an early 05 F350 with the tow command package. I had the dealership where I bought the truck, change the brake controller for the later one that does apply the brakes at standstill. It cost me to do it as Ford does not consider the original brake controller to be a warranty issue, as "it works as it was designed to work"
Approx $200 Can. and yes I am glad I did it. I can now do a pull test without having to chock the wheels of our 5vr. One day I might try and sell the old one on Ebay and recoup some of the cost.
