frame rail width?
Anyone know the distance between the frame rails and what year cross member will interchange? I want to lower my engine in the bay and have a beefy cross member vise the aftermarket universal mount. Thanks.

Thanks Krosati. I am also looking for the inner width. I think I may be able to use the rear crossmember from the old set up "IF" it dips down low enough to clear the oil pan with slight mods. What do you think the chances are for that?

Chances are good since you will need to box the framerails anyway. You could pick up a 1/4" or so depending on metal thickness and position against the rails.
My crossmember as flat and only falls about 1" below the frame rails. With the double sump pan, the engine should sit right between the rails.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Jul-02 AT 08:52 PM (EST)]I'm pretty sure the inside is a shade under 34". (seems like it was 33 1/2") The outside IS 34". At least that's what my 64's was. I had a universal engine crossmember in mine when I had the 302 in it. Worked great. It's the same one that Trans-dapt makes and is sold by several places.

Phil is right, it is 34" to the outside.
If you box the frame and weld the member to the bottom of the frame, you can duplicate the Fatman type.
If you are planning on welding or bolting it in between the frame rails and not boxing, you will get a lot of frame tweaking. When I get the frame back, I'll take couple of shots and email them to you.

Thanks guys. I was talking to one of thguys around here and he suggested a place to get some plate steel to box my frame at. I was thinking of going with 6" U channel steel but he tried that once and really fubar'd his frame. So I will wait until I get a pic or 2 to see what other options are out there.
