yet another stall....

I had some pretty severe stalling problems in my '88 but solved it with a new high pressure sender. It has run great until now. 2 times recently it has begun to stall at lights and stop signs, but it didn't last long. I chaulked it up to possible bad gas. Now for the last 2 days it has been doing the same thing. It starts fine, first try every time. Then, when I have to stop the tach needle jumps around from 400 to 800 and then dies. I immediatly pulled the air filter, but no go. I then noticed that when I start it it idles fine until I touch the gas. The gas peddle is sticking and that first push takes a small amount more effort than normal but once I "pop" it it starts to idle crappy. I think maybe I will go over the linkage with some graphite based lube tomorrow and see if that doesn't help. If anyone has any ideas past this, I am open to suggestions... Thanks
-Mike

I would check the throttle body linkages and throttle cable. Could also be a bad throttle position sensor -- or yours is going out. I would first pull codes before proceding and see what you get. You can get a reader for 30-50 bucks at most parts stores. They come in really handy. Once you get the codes, you can probably figure out what's going bad. Could also be the TFI module on the distributor, but then again, it wouldn't start at all if it was completely bad. Hope this helps!

Cool. I think I can borrow one for free. I am curious though.. Wouldn't the "check engine" light remain on if there were codes to pull? Or is that an indicator in newer vehicles? and these older models don't have a plug-in port per say do they? Sorry, this is the oldest truck I have owned and a novel to work on so I may ask some strange questions from time to time

It will have a port, using 2 seperate connectors. You might try cleaning the throttle body and IAC, and maybe the EGR valve and intake port. A CEL is an indicator of a hard fault, but I know first hand that you can have a code without a CEL. I had that happen on my '88 Ranger, no CEL, but I knew something was wrong by the way it ran. I pulled to codes KOEO, but in the KOER test I pulled 2 codes, never once had a light on in the dash. I agree that pulling codes is a good first step, if you get nothing a good upper intake cleaning couldn't hurt anything...
