97 Explorer transmission troubles
The folks here have been a great help in the past so hopefully you'll be able to help me again. I have a 97 explorer with the SOHC 4.0 and the 5 speed auto transmission, 168,000 miles. My problem is that when I put the transmission into gear for the first time after sitting for while, say an hour or so, there's this rattling sound for 2 or 3 seconds then it disappears. If I stop and shift in and out there's no noise. Once in gear the truck drives fine, no noise, feels the same as always. I took it into the dealer to have this investigated. The mechanic drove it three times and reported he found no problem, might have had the window closed. I did describe the noise to the service writer so I think they knew what to look for. I persisted that something was amiss so they put it on the rack and pulled the pan. Yes, there were metal bits there but I didn't see the pan or the debris. Their options for me were a rebuilt to the tune of $3200. Since the truck is only worth about $4000 that isn't s good option. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on in my transmission? I'm not driving it, but trying to sort out how to proceed. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
