When Shell introduced the V-Power 93 Octane here in the New Orleans test market area ... myself and some of my VW friends used it. Out of 5 tankfuls from 3 different stations I had one tank, that after I left the station my tires were spinning and I had lots of power ... the other 4 gave very poor performance, my VW required 91 octane minimum at that time and is now chipped to 93, I will push my car past a Shell station to another station if I ever have to. I began using the Discount Zone gas and my 220HP Beetle ran much better at 10cents a gallon less, I now use mostly Citgo since that is what is available on the base I work at. My F150 and DelSol get 87 Octane, anything but Shell gas and run fine. I don't believe I will ever use Shell gas again, and they brew it only a few miles away. Oh ... and I stopped using Shell gas about 2 weeks prior to them letting a large quantity of fuel with too much sulpher into the Louisiana and Florida markets, which caused fuel gauge failures in about 70 percent of the cars that got it, you wouldn't know why the car wouldn't start when the needle showed half or full tanks. When my 1.8T pings or is sluggish that only means one thing, the station I paid 20cents or more per gallon more for 93 Octane ripped me off with lower Octane fuel .... and I have only had that suspicion from Shell stations.
A service advisor I trust from a dealership I worked at in high school said that he noticed a lot of problems from Olds and Mazda customers about 6 years ago using Shell.
well i dont think shell has bad gas, i think the whole problem is the stations you buy the gas from, like when was the last time they may have purged there tanks or cleaned them or even replaced them from the old metal tanks with all the corrosion
they have to the new high strength plastic ones, theres a lot of factors as to why you might get a bad tank of gas, because truely all the gas that gets distrubited all
comes from the same place, all the company trucks pull up with differant names and
draw from the same tap. never had a problem with shell gas. maybe its you and your car not the gas...
I live in Oil Field Land ... there were 5 refineries operating within 25 miles of me before Katrina .... there are still at least 4, and their are a number more within 60 miles.
Shell gas comes from Shell refinery, others come from BP, Hess, Exxon/Mobile and others, at least they do in this area and I have seen many stations in this area where we live below sea level change their tanks every 4 or 5 years and have not seen a metal tank pulled from the ground in at least 20 years.
Shell gas just ain't all that good .... but then again, most of the automotive products that are highly marketed during automotive events are of the best quality, look at Fram, QuakerState, Champion .... etc, I am sure that a large number of people here will have some reason why they do not use some or all of those products either.
ive never had any problems with shell gas, just think its tanks maintanence that
some service stations are lacking. Up here in the GREAT NW i havent seen a
high strenght plastic type tank ever come outta the ground just metal ones,
but then agian cant be everywhere at once to see what there pulling out.
i always try and run some injector cleaner or gas treatment of some kind every other oil change or so to clean out my systems on my veicles. We went on a trip down to missori with our trailblazer and i put stp gas treatment in every tank i bought. My mom and dad had problems when they went down there, put gas in somewhere down there and screwed up there car bad. Ran like crap all the way home. They ended up getting the injectors power flushed or cleaned and then it was fine.

Hmm good info. Although I run injector cleaner through my truck every 5 or so tanks. Good info though.
I fill up with Shell gas just about every tank, and I havent had any problems...
I agree with those that say it is more tank maintenance at each particular station than anything else...
If that's the case then I should try others ... of the stations I used to get it at most, two were on very busy streets and usually had the pumps pumping all day and night long .... and one was in a smaller neighborhood. One of the two busy ones was the great tank ... the other was busier and always cause my car to lag. So how do you pick them .... they don't have a flag that says how old their tanks are.
Like I said, earlier, I just don't buy the gas with the big advertising budget ... when I do that always causes problems ... like the alcohol gas that was out in the mid 80's that was supposed to be better for your car .... I used it in my Carburated 80 Mustang no problem .... my new 85 VW Golf need all the injectors replaced when the car was 5 months old ... thanks Tenneco 10% Ethynol.
