E40D Hard shifts Something new!!

1994 F150 300 6 with an E40D
OK all you experts try this.
I posted this here because it deals with more than the trans.
I have been having trouble with hard shifts especially in hot weather
or only in hot weather. I noticed here a while back that when the trans starts shifting hard I can kill the motor for a few seconds, restart and the trans shifts
like new. I very seldom make a long trip in my truck. Mostly to store and back which is about 10 to 15 miles. The other day I followed my wife to a town about
40 miles from our house so she could get her car serviced. When we got
about 5 miles from home the trans started shifting hard. I was following her car after a stop at a light
and at about 50 mph I shifted to netural and killed the motor for 2 or 3 seconds and restarted the motor. Outside temp about 92.
I followed her at speeds up to about 75 mph and thru several small towns and
stopped at lights etc. and the trans never shifted hard again. On the way home it never shifted hard. I did notice the temp guage fell a couple of times
on the way home. It would drop about a quarter of an inch then go back to
where it always stays, kinda like a loose wire, which I could not find.
Any ideas?????
Jim

try replacing the neutral safety switch on the side of the trans where the shift cable hook up this is also the electronics on this trans usually fixes the hard shifting problem

I have run into somewhat the same prob. my 302 e40d would "bang" into gear really hard sometimes when hot. when it hit second it hit HARD and it didn't matter if I let off the gas or not. I found posted on here a year or so ago to tighten the bolts on my valve body [above the filter]. sure enough I got about a half turn on each bolt. prob cured. As close as I can tell when the fluid is hot and thin it must leak by the mounting plate on the valve body itself.. hasnt bothered me since.

I don't know if an "overheating" transmission will shift hard, but I know the torque converter will unlock. Makes me wonder if the solenoid is having a problem.

When it shifts hard, does the OD Off light on the end of your shifter blink? That would indicate that the trans has found a problem and you should be able to pull the codes by following the directions via www.fordfuelinjection.com. If you need any help PM me.
