Sometime back I installed headers and told myself I need to put boot protectors on my plug wires. I kept putting it off because of the $52 price tag plus $9 shipping thinking I could do better. Anyways I finally found a deal thru Autozone on line and ordered them. To the door was $43. I installed them and glad I did. My Ford Racing wire boots looked like they were getting cooked but still good. This could have been a problem down the road that was avoided. The protectors are fiberglas like everyone else has, silver in color and stretch to 8" and sold under the name Accel. A word to the wise , check your wires.
Excellent advise! Especially to those who ARE running aftermarket exhaust headers that are designed to dissipate heat faster than the OEM manifolds. The nearest place for heat to go would be right into the wires and boots.
I put headers on my old BRONCO and the relitivly new ford racing wires burned up in short order. I replaced them with 8.8 mm Accel High temp wires and never had a problem. I'm just about to put headers on my newer Bronco and I will change the wires at the same time. I think I will get boots also.
My question-At that time I had to take back the first wires and exchange them for a differnt style end boot. I think it was a 45 degree. The straight and the 90 didnt work. Is my memory correct? I also remember I had to switch to Bosche plugs because they are the shortest plugs for this application. That kept the wires from getting to close to the headers.
I have the Jacobs ignition and use the standard Autolite plus with a bigger gap. The Ford blue wires with 45 deg boots work just fine. I am running the Ford Stainless headers and removed the heat shields when I installed them
Thinking of wires...my next project. Ford Racing 9mm seem to be the favorite here. My question..going from OEM to 9mm do I need new wiring looms or clips or whatever they are called? The thingajiggers that hold the wires. Also, I see the connectors are stainless so are these compatible with aluminum posts on the Ford cap?
