Oil Change Intervals

Just wandering how far some of are gowing befor it Oil changing time. I have a low mile 7.3 IDI an will be using it for Lite towing from time to time & carrying Fire Wood. I dident get a Owners Manual with the Truck. I have some friends that have these IDI Motors an they all do there Oil changes at diffrent Mile intervals. They are using the Shell Rotella T. I am seeing anyware from 3-5K between changes Some are claming 7-10K This seems a bit extreem to me. I was reading today on a new Truck Not to sure if i can call out its name But anyway they are claming 15K between oil changes. Can some one set me stright on how far is a Safe distance between changes. And if one one to use the Synthetic oils would this Safley let you go further between changes. Thanks

I do mine every 3,500. Synthetic oils are more resistant to coking at higher temp's, but i wouldn't extend my change interval too much. Rotella is a great oil. So is Valvoline blue. Let me check my OM on the interval...

I am with stroke6 on this. Rottella-T in the IDI at 35 to 4000 the PSD right at 3500 use Delo-400 in the PSD have not gon the syn thing yet but if dino oil keeps climbing in price syn is looking better all the time. That said A buddy of mine who is a fleet svs mgr for a local leasing co did and still runs 10,000 intervals in psd vans but he pulls oil samples & sends to the lab every change he has not lost a motor yet & uses you gussed it Rottella-T........

Diesel combustion produces two things you do not want in your engine, soot and acids.
The soot is why the oil is so black and probably the worst byproduct of the two.
ANy oil can keep a certain amount in suspension, but if it is not in suspension it is being deposited in the engine in places you do not want it.

I run both synthetic and dino oils, they both get changed at 3000 miles.

You can buy a lot of oil for the price of replacing or rebuilding the engine.

I personally use Mobil Delvac oil.

The absolute best thing you can do is frequent oil changes, I bought a 305 motor out of a Chevy Nova that had 340,000 km on it from a guy who religiously changed oil in it every 5000 km. I bought it to rebuild, the timing gears and chain were about ready to fall apart, but amazing to me was that I was able to go back in with stock size pistons and bearings through out. This made me a firm believer in oil changes regularly. I do mine every 5000 km or 3125 miles, and use Penzol 15W40.

I use the Mobil Delvac and change it every 5k miles. oil changes are the life blood of any engine. When I get the bypass filter installed, then I will go to extended drain periods.

I did it on my 02 sonata and I have extended the oil change time to 10k miles with no damage to the motor. The car has 102k miles on it and does not leak or burn any oil.

An older diesel needs regular oil changes if you are running the dino-oil. I would never consider extending change time on regular oil. it just won't hold-up like synthetics will over time. Hope this helps.

Diesel suppliment states 5000 miles or 8000 KM. Those running more miles/kms have probably done an oil sample and been advised their engine is NOT showing abnormal wear particulate in the oil and they can increase the time between oil changes. Changing the oil at a lesser miles/kms may not be as good as an oil sample showing good or bad results.

Show me an engine with 400k on it and you won't have to go far to find the guy that changed the oil every 3500 miles.

I have used dino oil plus a liter or two of Duralube in my trucks since I bought them.

The reason you want to change the oil is multifold:
- thermal breakdown
- loss of lubricity
- build-up of carbon in the oil which is not filtered by the oil filter
- build-up of acids, salts, etc... which again the filter can not remove
- etc....

As the old diesel mechanics saying goes "All you need to do is your oil changes".

Seb...

What advantage does Rotella-T have over Delo400 in an IDI?

Rotella T has better anti foaming agents in it every one I know uses it due to four wheeling. The dello foaming makes the IDI run rough

Have any of you heard of or used the FS2500 soot sucker? I'm just seeing ads for it now & I.m curious if anyone has experience.

Probably also refers to the DS2500 in the fine print.
The DS stands for dollar sucker, 2500 stands for the 3/4 ton version which means it will not be cheap either.

Ever since I bought my 1991 F250 7.3 IDI, I have done regular 3000 mile oil changes. Sometimes I am really busy and dont get around to it right away but I don't let it go past 3500 miles. I use Rotella-T with soot control. Funny thing is, within the hour of changing the oil in my rig, the oil is pitch black again. Is there something wrong? I have a John Deere 3020 Diesel that does the same thing. It puzzles me even more when my father's 1996 F250 7.3 PSD runs clean oil for quite a while before it starts to turn black.
