It mostly depends on the size of the tire. I have aftermarket tires and wheels that are 275/55/20 wich is about 32in. tall, and it is a big tire not just a rubber band wrapped around a rim. I have the 4.2 with the 5 speed and my truck came with 3.55 gears and I would really like to get some 3.73's or 3.90's. The 3.73's should work the best all around (highway, city, and performance). If you have the 5.4 than it will do great.
I get about 14-17 in the city it depends on if I am fooling around, and the highway seems like 20-24 also depending on if I am messing around or driving normal (The Speed Limit). It has an exhaust and intake along with it being a 2wd short bed standard cab. Its not broke in yet.

Are the 20 inch wheels and the 3.73 gears a good combo?
I have the Roush 20" wheels with the 3.73's, and I think they are a good combo. They had to recalibrate the speedo according to the Roush sticker under the hood, but i've (over) loaded the truck several times already and it still pulls decent for the weight of the truck.
The "wheel size" is not an issue. You need to look at tire on the wheel. Especially look at the width and then the aspect ratio. This will determine how wide and tall the tire is.
Not sure exactky what you are looking for can you be a little more specific.
Sorry about not being specfic..The truck im looking at has the 20's. I dont really need them but its gettin to be slim pickin out there.
Always wanted a truck with larger than stock tires on it but dont know a thing about the correct tire/wheel setups, gears and such.
Is that doable with the 20's
I guess im trying to figure out if 18s and 3.73s would be a better set up as far as MPG and getting the truck rolling down the road and eventually putting a larger set of tires on, or if I can do it with the 20s,and how will it effect my towing capablities.
I think the 3.73's will work ok, as long as you not hauling real heavy loads. I want to get some 33's for my truck, but I'm gonna keep my stock King Ranch wheels, because I love the way they look on my truck. what's a good 33 inch tire?
