Gas mileage/common problems

I am looking to buy a diesel truck and I found one that agrees with my budget. Its a 1983 f250 4x4 w/ a 4 speed. Whats the common problems with this motor? What should I look at or be wary of? What kind of mileage can I expect with this kind of set up? 15ish?

Just sold my ranger (1991 4x4) so am new to the diesel forum. Hopefully will be a regular.

Mileage varies greatly based on gear ratios, driving habits, etc. Mine is a 7.3 and has 3.55 gears, automatic transmission, 33 inch tires. I get average 16 mpg around town and 20 on the highway. I'm hoping to get another 2 mpg by changing to a K&N air filter and getting my exhaust opened up to 4". (Currently, it's 2", way too small IMHO). But I've seen postings in here of people lamenting 10 mpg, and sometimes worse.

Matt is right. It all depends on everything he said, but i think your driving habits is the best way to raise or lower your mileage. My F-350, 7.3L, 4.10, manual transmission gets about 13-15 mpg on the highway and about 10 when im towin my 5th wheel with anywhere from 10-15k lbs. (and when im driving like im in the craftsman truck series) lol.
But then again, mines a dually 4x4.

You dont have to worry about cavitation as much on the 6.9 as the 7.3 (b/c the 7.3 is the same block as the 6.9 except it it bored out more which leads to thinner walls).
Make sure you test your coolant with special strips that you can get at your internaitonal dealer.

The glowplug system on the 6.9 is a little hard to diagnos and most people switch to manual operated glowplugs by running a toggle switch to the controller.
Heres a link for the manual plugs: http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/G...%20diagram.jpg

How many miles are on it? The early diesels can last up to 400k miles to my knowlege.
They are very durable and reliable.

Hope this helps ya and this place is the ultimate place for diesel know-how.
