I have a 99 4.6 offroad package and tow package...my tranny dumped on my last night and i need to replace it fast. I know i could rebuild it, but i have some leads on some cheap ones from a friend. Im not sure what one i have...i do remember that it has the deep oil pan and theres also one that doesnt have a deep oil pan... and i think there are three available this year from ford. What are they and what is the strongest of the three. And how hard is it to swap a tranny in these new fords, i mean like computer issues or linkage...i can do a basic tranny swap i just dont knowwhat extra bull will come with it.
the mazda five speeds are gutless that they put in the f-150's and are not for heavy pulling. Ive heard nothing but trouble when it comes to hard use for one of those.

Okay i just checked and i do have the 4r70w transmision with the deep pan. Would a E4OD swap be possible and easy, what would it involve. Am I mistaken that the E4OD is a stronger transmision than the 4r70W.
i understand the wireing harness, and pcm, but why the pos and driveshafts, it bolts to the same transfercase i assume, and is the pcm the pcm for the whole truck. dunno how i would change all that.
i typed pos. meaning possibly, the e4od is a longer trans than the 4r70w.the pcm controls the engine and the trans.look for a doaner truck.i personaly like the 4r70w better than the e4od.cost less to build ,weghts less, and dosnt have as many problems as the e4od.
okay i have tracked down a 4r70w from a trusted family member that rebuilds fords. he says it has 120,000 on it but the truck drove better than any other one he had with less miles... ran like new he says.. It works flawles and the truck was babyed its entire life. he wants 350 bucks for it. Im thinkin i might get it and put a shift kit in it. That should make it it last a very long time ...any thoughts...?
My current transmision just strated acting up yesterday it started to shift very slowly from o/d to 3rd. and the engine would rev up and clunk into third. and when i put it into reverse it gets all bound up and starts to shudder really bad. I jacked up the rear end and messed with it and noticed that when i put it into neutral that it still drives like drive. I have no idea whats wrong with it..so im pulling the pan tonight to check for metal...im sure i will find some. any thoughts on this?
hopefully you are talking about 2nd to 3rd,that could be a 2-3 accumulator piston failing, the shuttering in reverse is more than likely the reverse clutches failing.the reverse band almost never failes in this trans.with the vehicle jacked up and the vehicle in neutral the trans has enough static drag to cause the tires to turn.now if it was in neutral and on the ground and the vehicle was moving forward on level ground i would say the forward cluches are to tight.
No it wont, its going to cost minimum 650 bucks to rebuild it and it still gotta be droped and then put back up in... Less work and money to go with a used one and gamble on it...its got a warenty.
