I had the same question back in March, and I just decided to buy an aftermarket after finding out that only a radio from a 97-98 would fit. The reason why is the plugs on the back of the radio were changed after 98. The best thing to do is find an aftermarket radio with detachable face.

I am guessing here, but you can probably replace a part of the harness to get the new plugs. Our 98 had the plug cut off by someone who stole the aftermarket stereo. We got a replacement piece of the electrical harness from a junk yard. It is a piece about 18 inches long and it just plugs into the main harness under the dash. I am guessing that you could get the harness for the radio from the newer truck and plug it into the older truck.
