'97 Explorer "O/D OFF" dash light blinking

My sister-in-law just called me and said that "O/D OFF" light is blinking and also that the button on the shift handle seems "easier" when pressing it. She also said that there is no difference in the way it drives or shifts. I don't know if this could be that the button is broken or something more. I am going to assume that if it is the button, the whole shifter handle will have to be replaced. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Update

Just got a call from my sister-in-law again and she said it's now clunking and shifting hard. She's nearby and am having her stop at my house so I can disconnect the battery to see if it clears up. I just remembered about my dad's '95 Bronco which had a tranny problem earlier this year. All he was told to do was disconnect the battery and since then he's had no problems. I just hope this works.

If anyone can think of anything else, please still reply. I'll repost if the battery thing does the trick.

It's shifting hard because it's in cripple/limp mode. Hopefully, disconnecting the battery will reset the codes and the light should go out and back to normal shifting. If the light comes back on, get the codes pulled to see what they reveal.

I never got to try the fix because she decided to go home. I have no idea why she did that. Go figure.

Thanx for the reply given so far.

You should most certainly tell her that in the mode the transmission is in now it is taking life off of it every time she drives it that way. As marragtop said, this is a limp home mode and it is shifting harder than usual in hopes that the car can make it either (A) home or (B) a service shop.

She did get to a shop but I know nothing else from that point. We'll see if her stubborness did any damage or not.

Thanx all for your input.
