Timing

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Aug-02 AT 10:11 PM (EST)]My 64 tune up specifications list .014 to .016 on the points and 6 deg. on the timing. That will get you in the ballpark for sure.

Remember when you change the point gap or dwell, you'll change the timing somewhat -- so set the dwell first -- Do you have a dwellmeter? It's way easier to set points using a dwellmeter, in my experience anyway.

For timing, I just keep advancing the timing till it 'pings' on hard acceleration on the highway and then back it (retard) off a bit. The 64 has really low compression, 8.0:1 so it doesn't really need the high test stuff. It also says this in the Owners Manual:

*Ignition timing requirements may vary depending upon locality, fuel, and operating conditions. For best economy and performance, the timing may be advanced to a point just short of audible detonation under load but not to exceed 5deg over normal setting. Do not retard the initial advance beyond 2deg for sub-standard fuels.

Keep 'er between the ditches.
