Keep it or Sell it Part 2
First, unfortunately I don't have time to work on my own stuff; I generally prefer use independents.<o =""></o>
The engine was rebuilt locally and installed by a GM dealer, since the local Ford dealer indicated he didn't want to work on Aerostars. The transmission was purchased and installed from an independent transmission shop. The owner's have been friends of mine for many years.<o =""></o>
My decision to rebuild and keep my Aerostar was mostly driven by economics. Where can I buy a zero miles automobile for $5k? I live in north central <st1:state><st1 ="">Montana</st1></st1:state> and we don't have the rust problems that are found in other parts of the country. The state does salt the roads in the winter, but our winters are generally cold and dry, so not a lot of salt is used. Like all western states that have winter though, we go through a lot of windshields. I recently bought an Aerostar windshield and it cost $161. + change installed.
<o =""></o>The overdrive in the first automatic failed in <st1:city><st1 ="">Las Vegas</st1></st1:city>. My kids drove the car all the way back (about 1000 miles) without shutting the motor off or taking it out of gear. Instead of taking it to my friends with the transmission shop, they took the transmission to a fellow who had been fired by AMOCO and he used used parts (mostly from junkyards) to rebuild the transmission. That's why the second transmission only lasted 21K. The total bill was $400 less than the professionally rebuilt transmission that I had installed a couple of weeks ago.

Most of the Aersostar around here end up in the various county disabled vehicle yards; and mostly because of transmissions. It's incredible to me to see otherwise perfectly good Aersostars going to the crusher. Once they're in the county yard they're history because it's illegal to remove them or to part them out.
<o =""></o>Our Aerostar is our daily driver. My job takes my out of town at least four days a week and I'm in the Air Force reserve and travel about 550 miles one-way to my duty station in <st1 =""><st1:city>Ogden</st1:city>, <st1:state>Utah</st1:state></st1>. I average around 15K per year, which really isn't too bad compared to other places. Anyway 96_4wdr that's my tale…
the story about the Ford dealer refusing to work on an Aero is all too common.
