Mike:
Did you do the flow test? Disconnect the return line. Put end in bottle. Idle in park 15 seconds. Get minimum of 32 oz (2 qts) fluid. Use a 2 qt plastic milk bottle and hold it to half the time to avoid spill. This checks the entire cooling circuit under operating conditions and will detect any line or cooler plugs. My mind comes back to your report that you have had the tranny completely rebuilt; I assume because something failed. I visualize debris going through the cooling system, a kinked line, etc. which will be detected by the test.

I'll do the flow test again though that has not been a problem. The tranny was rebuilt a year ago and has had no problems and run cool. Like I mentioned before, the reason I suspect the cooler is because that is the only thing that has changed. The tranny was running cool after I flushed it and refilled with coolant. Two or three days later I changed out the intercooler and transmission cooler and now I'm running 160-180.
The hoses definitely have fluid in them because they are warm to the touch but I haven't done the flow test again. Will do and let you know.
I did the flow test - 1/2 gallon in 15 seconds. No obstructions. I also bought a 6.0 cooler on E-bay because I'm certain it is the large tube and fin cooler. That is the only variable to account for the temps rising.

Thanks again.

hope you're right. Please let us know the results.

PS: I'm remembering that you bypassed the radiator bottom tank cooler. That is your most effective cooler if it is working.
Okay men, here's the scoop. I installed the 6.0 tranny cooler and temps climbed as high as 175. This with radiator cooler in-line. Bypassed the radiator and reinstalled the Tru-Cool and drove it today (98* and very high humidity) and on 20 mile round trip, most in traffic, ran 155-160. Towards end of trip it crept up to 165 for just a minute.
That's still a little warmer than it was running with the stock 7.3 cooler and the Tru-Cool but is acceptable. Will have to re-check when the 5th wheel gets out of the shop - that's another story and suffice it to say that Nankang tires have not give me good service.
I agree and am going to replace the bypass if I can get it from the stealer. It acts temperamental, like sometimes its open and things warm up, sometimes it's okay and things stay cool.
Haven't heard about anyone else having the same issue but have heard about problems with the bypass valve.
