I have a 1972 F100 with a 360 engine. It has manual steering. I would like to convert it to power steering. I have seen some kits for this but they seem expensive to me. Is there a cheaper way to do this? What problems will I encounter?
I am assuming you have a 2WD?
You need:
Tools:
A PS pulley remover/installer
Parts:
A Ford/Saginaw PS box and pitman arm from a '70 - '79 2WD truck;
A PS column from a '68 - '79 2WD;
A PS pump from a '70 - '79 truck - get one for a '78/'79 F-150, and you will get the plastic wide mouth body type.
Return and pressure lines - same as for the pump.
A PS cooler - aftermarket is fine, and used is OK too.
FE PS steering pump brackets and pulleys. Caution: Do not mix and match pulleys and brackets between specific engines. You can use all the pulleys and brackets from one engine, and you can use them from a car or truck, but get them from one engine.
Ford made a wide variety of brackets and pulleys even from truck to truck and car to car for the FE engine, so you cannot just mix and match them, unles you have them all to try out on your engine at one time.
I installed power steering on my old '70 F100. I got my column from a '69, and the rest was from a '70. The best way to do the swap is to get all the parts from the same truck, in my opinion.
This is a little late but i am also looking to put power steering in my f100 i have a 1969 with a 360 2wd and auto trans and since i have manual steering from factory and maybe because of the year of my vehicle the front left engine perch right infront of the steering box is in the way you have to cut it out and drill a new mounting hole or get one that is from a power steering truck (bendix gearbox wont need this but saginaw/ford box will it is longer) research it a bit it might be ok for your year of vehicle since power steering is more regular by 72 and this relates to the engine perch not the motor mounts it has 2 holes on either side and a hole in the middle and this bolts I believe to the motor mount sorry im no mechanic but just wanted to prepare you so you dont go to a junk yard and miss that one part or dont want to grind yours out after i saw it somewhere on a 67-72 ford f100 page with pics and everything. phew long message
Get the proper perch from a donor truck that has a Ford box unless butchering parts to fit is your thing. I would rather have a Thomson pump than anything made of plastic to fail in the future unless your building a throw away truck.
