1 Working System!!!

The ''Foose chop'' on my cab left no space for a w/s wiper mechanism after the a/c unit was installed so the 56 wiper assembly was replaced with a 53-55 system. I ended up with a VW motor (mounted above the kick panel on the driver's side) and fastened to the wipers with a rod threaded left and right for adjustment. On Saturday it roared to life (powered by a trickle charger) but the sweeps are perfect and it's quiet. It is the first functioning system, makes me feel like there is an end to this. Will post pics of the parts and of the underside of the dash if I can get in there.

That is awsome, Tim. Did you mount the wiper arms in the 56 locations? Do they sweep toward and away from each other like stock?

I am consistently amazed at your solutions to this kind of stuff...and the guts you have to tackle things like a Foose chop.

Go Dude!!!

Tim that sounds neat, it would be nice to see a pic of the new system.

Isn't it great when you cobble something together and it actually works?

I always find wipers and other underdash items a real pain. Probably due to my age. I'm glad you got a solution and it worked the first time. That's a treat.

thanks guys, the wipers now mount in the 53-55 location and do the overlapping sweep, there is a picture of the pivots in my 'firewall/cowl' gallery. Larry is right about the underdash stuff, I have been dancing around this for a while, but invariably it turns out to be not so bad once you get into it.

Fatfender56,
Nice mods, what are the name and size of the rims you have on your truck?

thanks Jaye, the wheels are clones of the old Astro Supremes, 15X7 front, 15X10 rears. They are available through a few places, I got onto to them thru a dealer at the SEMA show. The company is located on Long Island, I can probably find the name if you are interested.

Your truck is looking great. By the time you get finished you might make a dark sider out of me yet...

Boy, I can relate with the wipers. It's difficult to get to the mechanism especially with an air conditioner unit/ radio etc installed. I gave up on mine and figured since I'm in CA I don't need wipers anyway. So I made some stainless steel caps and removed the wiper blades altogether. Kinda like the look without the wiper blades.

I guess you don't have a state inspection there. I could never get away with that here. Although, even if you don't have a state inspection don't you have to be concerned with spot inspections by law enforcement? I had a 29 Ford a few years ago that I used the wipers on once a year...at inspection time. The rest of the time I used Rain-X...better than wipers!

Fatfenders56,
Send me the info on the rims; the only thing close to them I've found are the mustang rims which I don't think are deep enough.
Thanks
Jaye

Vern- we don't have any type of safety inspection here in CA. Police officers have better things to do than occupy their time writing citations for no wipers. They are pretty picky about tinted windows. We have smog inspections every two years, but again, they could care less about the wiper situations. If rains that bad (and we had some bad rains last year) I usually drive my other truck and keep the 56 in the garage. Save me from spending a day cleaning the chrome etc.

That is awesome! I'm glad that things are rolling along forward for you. Out here in New Mexico it finally started raining and its either feast or famine. Its been coming down in buckets. I love it, well, with the exception that I've been procrastinating on the wipers and now I don't have any at all.
Did I mess with the wipers when I didn't have seats, instrument cluster, or floor shifter in the way....NOOOOO!!! No I need to stand on my mead and worm my way around the obstacle to get under there.

Thats cool that you got them up and running.

Frosty beverages all around!
