dash lites

I lost the tail lites on my 65 3/4 ton with a disc brake power steering conversion from a 71 3/4 camper special. the truck has been done for several years and last week the tail lites quit after having a load of watermelons on it. i off loaded them in to another truck last friday and started working on tracing the wiring problem on this friday. after fooling with several wiring connections and getting the tail lites to work and retaping all connections I thought all was well for a trip to the kansas city farmers market with another load of watermelons this past weekend. when it was to late to do anything about it, I noticed the gas gauge was pegged full as well as the heat gauge pegged hot and the oil pressure gauge also. for you electrically minded guys what did i do to short all 3 of those gauges out. i went ahead and made the trip but i want to fix the gauges before the trip next weekend. thanks in advance.

The small Constant voltage regulator on the back of the dash fried. It has no connection to the tail light problem. It allows 6 volts to go to the dash guages. With it fried, the guages are getting 12 volts, causing them to peg. It's a small box, 1/2 inch thick or so, 1-1/2 long and 3/4 wide. It has 2 wires going into it. NAPA or CarQuest has them.
