If you overloaded your vehicle and were involved in an accident...they would deem you at fault and if you don't have collision insurance than they would not cover you. Your rates would also go up. Same thing if you have an illegally lifted vehicle.
So.... If I do have collision insurance they will cover me? And my rates will NOT go up? What about the Liability coverage I am required to have in order to register my truck? What about here in MI where we have No-Fault Insurance?
Why do they cover drunk drivers that are in accidents if they are not going to cover me?
What insurance company did you ask about this?
AAA does cover up to the limits of the policy.
Well, that was somewhere around 1992. I think that's when we had all the rain and mudslides out here. I chalked it up to live and learn. Part of life seems to be about whether or not you survive your fall out of the "Stupid Tree".

If you do have collision insurance and your involved in an accident that is deemed your fault...your vehicle would be covered and your rates WOULD go up. Whether or not they would cover you in having collision insurance and breaking a load law is beyond me...but if you were in an accident that they deem your fault and otherwise wouldn't be (but because of the load) than they may not cover you if you don't have collision (when they otherwise would).
I have insurance in MA, which is a little different than other states...and I am by no means an insurance expert....
The main point I was getting at is DON'T OVERLOAD YOUR TRUCK.
Insurance companies are required by law to cover you up to the policy limits. In ALL states. Overloaded or drunk doesn't matter, you're covered.
To date, I have NEVER been able to find a single case where someone was sued for being over the GVW set by any auto manufacturer. With all the trucks out there that run over the GVW it should have happened at least once.

Completely false. I promise you.
Hang on while I find the article.
Couldn't find it. There was a thread here a couple months ago about a guy who was overloaded. He caused an accident and killed someone. His insurance company won't pay for anything, he lost a civil suit for a couple million, oh and he stood trial for manslaughter. I don't know the verdict.
