i am wanting to install 3 autometer carbon fiber faced gauges on my A pillar...
i have a manual trans so im thinking pyro....boost...and fule pressure...mainly because fule pressure is the only other thing that i do not have a guage for...
my question is how would i hook them up? i know that the sending unit for the pyro needs to be in the exhaust before the turbo, but should it be in the manifold or in the pipe comming out of the manifold? i am also not sure how to hook up the boost gauge or the fule pressure gauge.
I have that exact setup on my truck, except I have a trans temp gauge for my auto. Check my gallery for some pics. You should be able to see where I have my gauges hooked up under the hood.
For install of the pyro, I'd get it right in the manifold. It's really pretty easy to get to the driver's side manifold to drill and tap it.
If you've done the AIH delete, that's a great place to hook up your boost gauge. Alternatively, you can put a T in the MAP sensor line and install it there. If you've got a regulator in your MAP sensor line, put the fitting before the regulator. If you've got a boost relief valve in your MAP line, the gauge may not read accurately once it starts to bleed off the excess pressure. That's why I like it in the intake spider - it will always read the actual boost that's going into the engine.
If you haven't checked the price of the fuel pressure gauge, you might change your mind about it once you see it. If you do get it though, you can put it in one of the unused plugs on the back side of the fuel bowl. You'll need an adapter fitting (ITP sells them) to make it fit. The fitting is on the driver's side, towards the top, and has a allen head on it.
I just installed my boost and pyro tonight but i put the pyro probe after the turbo just becasue if the probe chould shatter or melt i wouldnt want it to go through my turbo...
and on another note, i dont mean to thread jack but how much boost are these trucks supposed to run normally cuz i was pushing 22psi in my truck and i thought it was supposed to be less.... if that is more how can i tell if its chipped and if thats going to effect the install of my Dp chip?? thanks
Badluck, I have yet to hear of a probe shattering in one of our trucks. It might happen in an OTR, but guys have been running them for years on these engines without failure. I would highly suggest moving it to pre turbo. I've done some testing on pre vs post EGT, and the results suprised me....made me glad I've got one pre-turbo. Your boost readings seem to be just a touch on the high side, but if you've got a strong turbo, it's probable. The only way to see if you've already got a chip on it is to physically look at the computer to see if there's one on there. It would go in the same place that your DP chip goes. If there is one on there already, just pull it off and put the DP chip in place.
hmm good to know, the only reason I put it post turbo was becasue my dad who has been a diesel mechanic for like the last 35 years told me to put it post turbo beacause he has seen a ton of trucks and tractors melt the probes and casue the turbo to eat ***** which is something i really dont want to happen, so i figured Id just be on the safe side and put it post turbo and keep the egt's at 900 or less
AIH = Air Intake Heater. It's just a metal coil that's in the intake to heat the incoming air. But it only runs under some crazy specific conditions, like oil temp below a certian point, has to be so cold outside, truck has to be in park (or parking brake set on a manual), and has to be idling for an extended period. So, it hardly ever runs and is basically just a restriction in the intake.
Which sending unit are you talking about? The pyrometer probe? It's an 1/8" NPT thread that you'll need to drill and tap.
For other gauges, I plan on installing water temp, oil pressure, oil temp, and voltage. If you were to only chooe one, I'd go with water temp since the one on the dash is basically a glorified idiot light. Of course, you could always go with a 4 gauge pod and put water temp and oil pressure in there.
i got the gauges i wanted....are there any spare circuits under the dash to tap into to power the gauges? i was woundering can i come off the dimmer switch for the factory gauges to power the lights in the aftermarket gauges? does anyone know what wire it is???
