Patchin' Up A Rust Hole

My '74 F100 longbed has a rust hole in the left-rear fender. The hole is next to the bumper and is probably a little smaller than my hand.

I'm looking at fixing this hole. I'm not sure how to go about it.

Any advice would be great. The only body work I've ever done was with a rubber mallet (a "friend" jumped on the hood of my other truck )!!!

The truck won't see a new paint job for awhile. I was gonna' spray a few coats of primer on the infected area to protect until new paint comes. Anyways, thanks for readin'.

Buy a patch panel from NPD or auto krafters and weld it in place after you cut the old rust out. You also might check out panel adhesives at http://www.lord.com/Default.aspx?tab...rocedures_tips for a easier alternative to welding.

Hey thanks. I didn't think about patch panels.

I also don't know how to weld either (someday I will). So that link you got there's pretty handy.

You might rethink about leaving your patch in primer for any length of time because regular primer will not protect the metal underneith it. primer will allow moisture to pass through it. You need to put some regular paint on the spot. Just go get some rattle can stuff that is about the same color as your truck and just put that over the primer, 2 coats should do it and then it is all sealed. You still need to do the primer thing first tho. Then later when the new paint job happens it will all be sanded anyway.
I have been painting cars as a hobby for 40+ years and quite often the prep job would last for quite a while before actual paint and this is the best way you can protect the metal. If you are just scuffing the paint there is no problem but once metal is exposed (as yours will be) then rust WILL happen.
Good luck with with your repair

I've been doing some patching/body work on my pickup and just left the repairs in primer for about a month, but it's been inside the shop too... Yesterday I washed it while it still had primer spots. Should I sand them off and repaint them since I got moisture on it, or would that be a bit obsessive! I sure don't want to have to do this bodywork/painting business anytime in the near future!
