I have a 2006 XLT Sport Expedition with 5.4L and it has the standard luggage rack but didn't have to cross bows. The dealer wants big bucks for the cross bow "kit" and I wondered if anyone knows where I can buy the cross bows aftermarket or somewhere where I don't have to sell the spare tire and wheel for the down payment.
Also want to know if I can burn E-85 gasahol. Can't find anything in the book about it.
I also have a '06 Expy. I wouldn't burn E-85 without a clear OK from Ford. It's sold in a few places around here (WV-my summer place) for about 20 cents below gasoline but there will be a loss in mileage since alcohol delivers less heat of combustion than gas and most cars are not yet able to handle it without damage. I'd also like to take my business away from the arabs but not at the expense of my high priced car.
I wouldn't try and burn E85 in these engines. I've got an '06 EB Expy and I've looked into this and have learned that cars that burn E85 have internal components that can tolerate the added heat of burning alcohol. If you try E85 in these engines and cause damage it will not be covered under your warrenty.
As far as the luggage rack bows, it's a $40 option on Fords website. Go to www.fordvehicles.com and build your Expy. The luggage rack with cross bars is listed under "options". The guy you spoke with is trying to rip you off or he didn't understand what you were asking for.
I know about the crossbows being a $40.00 option but I didn't get them at the time and now the parts guy says they're over a $150.00 to buy them. He says it's a "kit". I don't understand that. I wouldn't think it would be that difficult to install since the luggage rack is on already.
RCH, you are correct the cross bars did not come with my expy either. I have an 05 Eddie and was pissed that on a 45k truck the dealer did the same thing he wanted 150.00 EACH for them. I piched enough fit that the dealer finally agreed to give them to me.. HA HA HA.. I am still waiting.. excuse after excuse the sales jerk is just jerking me around.. and the manager is an equal jerk. I have successfully used a Thule soft bag without them . but NO you don't have to take off the rack to install. they just pop in so to speak. I am waiting to find a pair at a salvage yard.. I rarely use the rack so I am not all fussed over it..
Sorry for your bad experience. How is your gas mileage?
I have a 2003 XP 5.4, Yesterday was the first time that I drove it more than 2 hours away from my home town, I got 19 MPG with 7 people and 87 Octanes Gas.
mine is a 4x4 by I never engage it, so that should not make any difference...
How more fuel efficient are yours since they are 06?
I haven't had a chance to get a good highway check, but city (mostly) and some highway is coming out to about 13 mpg. Also using air conditioning just about all the time here in Kenosha, WI this summer. A lot less milage than I suspected but about the same as my '92 F-250 with 351cid.

Engaged or not, a 4x4 still has the extra weight of a transfer case, front differential, driveline etc. Along with extra friction of turning the t-case gears (even when not engaged) and the front axle shafts/gears. So, it does make a difference.
