wrong the whole time?

hey guys i was just reading the articles on 1997 f350 diesel fuel filter change and it says to unscrew the round black cap and pull the yellow lever and drain the fuel in the bowl?well the last 75k miles i have always unscrewed the black cap dropped in a new filter and done.never drained the bowl.so obviously you guys do drain the bowl my question is what is in that fuel?water?why does it need to be drained?what should i do since i have not done it in so long?how often do you change your filter?also thx for the help on my cps ebay hooked me up and a simple change took 10 minutes

Draining the filter housing does two things. Gets rid of the crud and stops the spillage while changing out the filter.

Check the bottom of the housing for dirt and clean it out.

Be careful not to injure the heater element in the bottom, Inspect it, should not be loose at the solder connections.

okay i went out and drained the bowl couple problems.first in the very bottom under the elevated platform i see dirt ,how do i get to it or what do i spray it with? carb cleaner?second on the elevated platform theres a small wire connected to three large dots, runs in a circle, looks like their soldered to each one ,the last two are not connected, looks like the solder broke.is this the heating element you spoke of?what do i do with that, does it have to be soldered, does it conduct heat throughout the platform?when i removed the filter initially the last dot had the wire on the inside of it like its been off for a while.

That is the fuel heater. You should probably get a new element for it. When your broken one shorts out it will pop the fuse that powers the PCM and the truck wil quit running.

Do what cookie said.

This should help.

Fuel Heater

Removal
  1. Drain fuel filter housing.
  1. Remove fuel filter cap and element.
  1. Disconnect heating element electrical connector.
  1. Unscrew stand pipe from fuel filter housing.

  1. NOTE: Bevel-cut gasket must be oriented properly or assembly will leak.

    Remove fuel heater element.
