Front Wheel Driving?

I've got a vibration I've been trying to track down for the last year and a half, and it's finally come down to the rear driveshaft being bent, or out of balance.

The only d-shaft shop in town I trust wants the shaft off of the truck when I bring it in, they don't want to take the liability of removing it from the truck (strange...) I was toying with the idea of pulling the shaft, and just puttering on over to the shop in front wheel drive.

Other than keeping it slow and taking the surface streets, anyone see any reason why I couldn't do this??

I have heard it can be done. Make sure when you take the driveshaft off you mark where it is supposed to line up. If you are a little nervous about driving with it off maybe you can take it off in their parking lot?

I also have driven with just the front shaft on, no real difference until you go around a sharp turn then you may feel a slight binding of the front axel joints.I drove the truck about 25 miles this way,,did fine.

This was on my 99' F-350, had removed the rear drive shaft, to have u-joints done and greased spline, brought it to a driveshaft company, they also re-balanced it.

I have also done this before. No problems, but the truck will drive a bit different just like a front wheel car is different when compared to a rear wheel drive car.

I haven't done this with a newer truck, but my 79 took a 20 mile trip on the front axle. I haven't looked at my 02's transfer case, just be sure your transfer case doesn't leak with the shaft out. The other Idea is to pick up a junk yard DS and give that to the shop.

Thanks for the repiles all...

ReAX, thats what I was afraid of, but after looking at the d-shaft, it's got a 'flange' attachment at the trans so I've got no fears of the t-case going dry.

Thanks all!
