Got a question similar to Desertwolf's. I have the 4 spd manual with the stump puller low gear in it in 84 F-250 4x4. I'm thinking about swapping it out for a 5 speed so I can have the OD out on the highway. Is there one that will bolt to my bell housing and accept my trans case? I have the 300 6 banger. I also need to be able to keep as low a first gear as possible because I do occasionally need it to pull stuff. Thanks for any answers you can give me.
You might also want to consider the four speed overdrive. The four and the five have different final gear ratios, according to someone who posted recently. I know the four has a .70. I think he said the five had a .80 ratio. I have the four, turn only 1600 rpm at 60 mph (with a 3.08 rear). My highway mileage has been around 19 lately and thats with the extra weight of a Supercab and long bed. It's not a stump puller, but if I'm towing something over 1500 lbs I'll just stay in third gear. That's a 1.00 ratio, same as your fourth gear.
You can get a ZF five speed from a 88-96 F-250. It still has a good low gear and a decent overdrive at .76 I think. It is a easy swap just remember to get the crossmember for the transmission so it will bolt in as they are different. All you should need is a new clutch hose from a 88-96 model and new slave cylinder, caution ford used 2 different clutch hoses, make sure you get the one for the slave cylinder you get. You may need to get your driveshaft shorten/lenghtend depending on your current set up. But really a very easy swap.
Thanks for the info. I'm gonna start shopping the junkyards around my area and see what I can come up with. I've driven trucks with both of these trannies for work and I like both. See which one fits my needs. I had forgotten about that 4 speed. With the gearing this truck has in the axles, it might be a viable option. I'll let ya'll know how things go over the next few months.
