swapping 4 speed to automatic

I have a 1974 302 with a truck 4 speed bolted to it. Can I simply swap it over to a c4 automatic. Crank, bellhousing, starter same?? Any balancing problems to expect?

Crank's the same, C4 has interchangeable bellhousing, starter's the same. Going from a pressure plate to a flexplate that wasn't balanced with your rotating assembly will cause accelerated bearing and main seal wear.

Is this a major problem? Like how fast would it wear? Does this cause a noticable vibration. You can't balance a flex plate on an assembled motor, right? I suppose the same condition would apply when you replace a worn flywheel on a 302.

I really couldn't say how fast it would wear, I guess it's just a try-it-and-see deal. If she shakes real bad, I guess you'll know it wasn't a good idea . Also remembered- your driveshaft length is probably going to change too. Is your motor due for a freshen-up? It would be nice if it was, get it all balanced while you've got it apart.....

It shouldn't be a problem as long as you use a pre-1981 flexplate with 28oz. imbalance. The factory balance is close enough for a stock motor.

It'll be a early '70's flexpate. Do the bolt holes on the crank/flex plate line up only one way so the proper balance is achieved, or are there identifying marks to line up?

Only one way. And I think the guy that designed that bolt hole pattern was having a really good day .
