OK here I go exposing my ignorance again. My '90 300 was running like h*ll, thought it might be the cat converter, it was. Sent it to the shop to have them replaced now the mech. says it is dumping a lot of fuel and that was what caused the catalytic converters to go in the first place. So far so good, now the tough part - says about $2000 to fix, new injectors, gaskets the whole nine yards. Well, if thats true now its down to me and a chilton manual and about a month in the driveway. Question is, what are the odds he is right? Any other possibilities? I've checked with some of my mechanic friends and they tell me that a throttle body and injectors can easily cost that much. So how about I go to my friendly automotive recycler and pick up the parts used, any chance of getting good ones? Finally, aside from good ole Chilton, anyone know a good publication or web site that has good info (I read good, fix-not so good). Or I could call Click and Clack the tappet brothers...
You are on the best web site .
The first place to start is to pull the codes. You can do that with a paper clip.
One or more bad sensors can cause it to run rich. Running a thermostate lower than the stock 195 deg, can also make it run rich. Same for a bad O2 sensor or a fuel pressure regulator. Injectors can be cleaned and tested for less than $100 at cruzin performance. The throttle body can be cleaned and new gaskets installed when the injectors are out. A good set of wires, plugs, cap and rotor are pretty cheap and can also cause over rich condition. Don't forget to pull the spout connection and replace it when setting the timing. Runs pretty bad if you neglect to do that.
Do a good tune up, and pull the codes before you start throwing parts and money at it. Depending on what shows up you might get it in good shape for 10-15 % of the $2000.
Good luck Frank
Thanks for the reply. The one thing I'm getting from everybody is run the codes, damn I miss carburators. I did the midnight inspection for bad spark pulg wires and pulled the distributor cap, guess I'm going to have to get more involved. That $2000 ought to be a pretty good incentive.
