Hello. I have just happily bought a 66 F-250. It needs a bit of work. The truck will only run if the choke is open. Even when the engine is warm, if I push in the choke, the engine dies. The idle is very high. Is this normal? Can I get a carburetor with an automatic choke? What can I do? Thank you for your kind attention. Lew
Hello, Lew, and welcome! I think you will be happy with this board. Since you are starting to work on your truck, you will find that the frustration caused by it will often be soothed over by the guys (and gals, we have a few!) here.
May I suggest you post your VIN and Warranty Plate info here, and we can decode it for you. Once you know those details (assuming it is original to the truck) it will be a great help to us helping you.
Now about that carb. You need to tell us a little more about your engine and all, but right off, it sounds like you need to put a carb kit in it. Possibly, your carb is dumping more fuel down the engine than it needs.
Do you smell gas when it is running?
How long did it sit, if at all, before you got it?
Have you looked down the throat while it is running to see if gas is spraying down? You shouldn't see any at all, by the way.
Also, forgive me if i touch on the basics, I don't know your level of experience. Fortunately, these trucks are eay to work on, and eay to learn also.
Again, welcome!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-02 AT 11:54 PM (EST)]It should die if you choke it all of the way. It can't get any air. Could be a blown powervalve ( which will dump fuel down the idle slots and won't be very detectable ) or the mixture screws could be out way too far.
Oh, wait a minute, I think he means with the choke shut. The fast idle is probably because when the choke is closed, you are on the fast idle cam.
The idle screws may be in too far ( not enough fuel ) or a vacuum leak, of just a buch of varnish in the carb clogging it up.
From what they said at the shop... a little bit of everything is wrong with that carb....They're doing a complete rebuild....It just happens to be the original carb, probably never rebuilt except for what I THOUGHT I DID.... Ignition seem to be fine
