04 FX4 Scab - My engine will knock for about 2-3 seconds right after it is started when cold. Anybody else have this issue. It just started doing it this week - truck has 33k miles on it.
Also, anybody know what to do for a squeaking drive belt - could it be worn out already? Thanks in advance.
The engine knocking could be from having the wrong oil filter installed, one without the drainback flap. There is a tsb for a sqealing serpentine belt. Ford had to change mine free of charge, but it took 6 hours for them to change it. They had none in stock which leads me to believe that they have changed a few of them.
I always use motorcraft filters, so that can't be it. The cam phaser TSB is for knocking after normal operating temps. Mine only does it on the first start of the day or after it sits for numerous hours. Not to mention the knocking is very severe but only lasts a few seconds.

I've got the same problem (65K miles). I believe it is the lifters being void of oil at start up.
Some guys think we're running the wrong filters but you have to stop and think for a moment. The crank bearings are not sealed. . . the rod bearings are not sealed. Over time, these contact surfaces wear and thus the oil from the upper part of the engine including the lifters, drains back to the pan through these bearings. I am having some luck with a preluber but it is not perfect.
Don't get me wrong, you could have a bad oil filter but i think it is rare especially if you run a Motorcraft or other good filter.
About your squeaking belt, I'd go with a Goodyear Gatorback belt. The aggressive tread design gives it a lot more grip than the stock belt. I got mine at Troyer Performance. They shipped it to me in a few days and was easy to install - about 30 minutes.
