I want to make one more comment about ease of working on the Aerostar, having recently done some pretty major work on mine.
Most under-hood work, like changing plugs or gaskets for the valve covers or manifold, will be much harder to do than on cars where most fo the engine isn't obscured by the cowl. However, major drivetrain work may be a little easier, since you can get to the top of the transmission from the dog house to get to the top bolts. You can't do this with most rear-drive cars that don't have that cover. The water pump and front cover work I just did this weekend would be no different than on most rear-drive cars. That would actually be a little worse on front drive cars.
tell me about it....flushed and put new thermostat and coolant in wife's CRV this weekend.....2 u-joints and 2 extensions to get at the bolts on thermostat housing on back side of engine block...could not even see one of the bolts
supposed to be a block drain plug on the backside...even with a photo I could not see or find it...just a tiny 4 cyl in a cavernous eng. comp.....
have to put up on lift or ramps to get at oil filter on back side of block from underneath....just enough room to get arm thru and barely reach it.
Thanks for the replies. I've decided to keep the aerostar. I will be replacing the outer tie rod ends this week since they have about a 1/4" of play. A/C doesn't work. Seems everyday I find something else That needs fixin'. Will be removing running boards this week as well. Just don't care for the look.
