changing an 96 250 Auto to Manual?

how hard would it be to change a 96 f 250 auto to manual?right now it has the e 40d and i really dont like it.I was told that If i change it over i will have to take the manual tranny and put it in another bell housing for some reason. Is this true?I know ill need the pedals stick shift etc.how much would i pay for all this from a junk yard?any other things i would have to change?thanks

What kind of problems are you having with the E4OD?

I think that you will be disappointed with the manual if you are looking for more pulling power.
An auto actually has more pulling power than an auto because of the torque multiplication of the torque convertor.
You can certainly do the swap, the easiest way is to find a truck like yours with a manual transmission and buy all the parts needed. Depending on the transmission be ready to shell out at least a couple of thousand dollars. This isn't going to be a cheap deal and you still have all the labor involved.

Good Luck

You're going to want the ZF 5 speed. Stay away from the M5OD for what you want to do. The ZF is only found in F-250 and F-350 trucks, and you'll need to find one of those trucks that also had a 300 or a 351 in it. The 460 and diesel versions have a different bellhousing.

I would buy a parts truck and swap what you need over. Then sell the other truck and get your money back. If you buy the parts individually, it will cost you a fortune.

You also need to make sure the donor truck/tranny is a 4x4.
